How to read these codes#

How to triage a OneDrive sync app errorStep 1: Note where the error appears. Sign-in window: sign-in and setup codes. Figure 1 · Process How to triage a OneDrive sync app error. Use where the error appears and the code's prefix to find the right table, then follow that entry's first check before any reset.
  • Where they appear. Sign-in and setup codes show in the OneDrive sign-in window. Sync and file-system codes show in the sync app's notifications or as Windows errors when you open, move or delete a file in the OneDrive folder.
  • What the prefix tells you. Most 0x8004deXX codes concern sign-in, account or setup state. 0x8007XXXX codes are Windows errors passed through OneDrive, such as the cloud files and reparse point errors below.
  • The admin view. The OneDrive sync health dashboard in the Microsoft 365 Apps admin center (Health › OneDrive Sync) shows sync status, app versions and Known Folder Move progress per device. It needs sync app 22.232 or later, a Tenant Association Key from the dashboard's Setup page, and the EnableSyncAdminReports policy on each device. The older SyncAdminReports key is no longer supported.
  • The standard reset. Many entries end in a reset. It disconnects every sync connection but doesn't delete files; afterwards you choose any selected folders again.
Command Prompt
%localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\onedrive.exe /reset
REM If Windows can't find it, try the per-machine location:
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft OneDrive\onedrive.exe" /reset

How to verify a fix#

  1. Sign-in completes and Settings › Account lists the expected work account and location.
  2. The OneDrive icon reports that files are up to date, and File Explorer shows normal status icons on the folders that failed.
  3. The file or action that failed works: open the online-only file, rename the item, or confirm known folders show as backed up under Settings › Sync and back up.
  4. If you use the sync health dashboard, the device's errors clear after its next report.
  5. For network codes (0x8004de40, 0x8004de88, Error code 6), sign in from the same network as the user, not only from a test machine.
